When my first baby was on the way, I felt so ready to document every moment. “What a lucky baby you’re having,” my friends said. “Her mom is a professional photographer, so she’s going to have every moment of her life beautifully documented!” …then she was born. WOWZA! People can tell you what that first year is like, but you’ve just got to live it to get it.
ALL MY PLANS CHANGED AS I ADJUSTED TO LIFE AS A MOM,
INCLUDING THE WAY I DOCUMENTED OUR LIVES.
I thought I’d be this camera-wielding mama capturing every special moment with Olive. But to be totally honest, I spent most days doing laundry and daydreaming of five more minutes (heck, I’ll take two if you’ve got ‘em!) of sleep. I also quickly realized that I wanted to be IN the photos, not just take them. So, when we learned Baby Theodore was on the way, I knew I wanted to do things differently this time around. I wanted to put my camera down and step in front of someone else’s. So, I did, and the joy it brought changed my life!
Today, I invite parents like you to step out of the noisy busyness of modern life to document the things that truly make life so awesome.
Instead of hoping for perfection, I incorporate the fun of movement, play, and laughter into sessions. I tell your oldest that yes, I absolutely do, of course, want to see the Lego Pikachu in their pocket and that yes, we can definitely take pictures with the frog they just found. I tell your youngest that they can for sure wear their tutu for part of the session and that I want them to show me how they lost two teeth since our last session. I want your family sessions to feel less like a box checked and more like a memory made. And I’ll document it all in colors as vibrant as your personalities!
But even though I love my job so much that (cliché alert!) it totally doesn’t feel like a job, I’m not always taking photos. When I’m not planning my next family session, you can probably spot us visiting our favorite local brewery, heading out on a hike with our two dogs, or diving into a new podcast. I’m also a huge shoe lover, though you won’t find pointy toes or stilettos on my list of faves. I’ve got a closet full of Birkenstocks, Nike high tops, and colorful Vans; so get ready to see my latest and greatest during our session! We are travelers, sports fans (go Vikings!), and concertgoers. Our life is full—and sometimes a little nuts!—but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Instead of hoping your kids won’t hate the fancy new outfits you think they should wear, let them dress in clothes they love. You just can’t beat the confidence radiating off a child showing off their favorite dress, shoes, or shirt! (Psst…this goes for husbands, too!)
DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE MESS
I’m such a fan of in-home sessions where we can preserve moments in well-loved spaces. Don’t worry if your living room doesn’t look like Joanna Gaines stopped by to stage it! Years from now, your kids will treasure this window back to their childhood home.
SHRED THE EXPECTATIONS
Close that Pinterest tab and stop stressing over what you think a family session should be. Instead, let’s get creative and find ways to document everything that makes your family so unique and special.

After more than a decade in the family photography business, I’ve seen infants grow into boisterous middle schoolers and families explode from two to six! Documenting changes as they come is the most rewarding thing about what I do, so let’s make this more than a one-time thing!
